COLOR RACERS

Color Racers were made for only 2 years. Keith Hippely of Mattel had seen color changing plastics and encouraged paint suppliers to develope paint with those properties. After many failures an acceptable paint was developed and Color Racers came to be. Some colors have survived the passage of time better than others. A medium blue that changed to white has aged worst of all. Items of this color have turned to a greenish white with no changing of color any more. Two cars, Auburn 852 and Mercedes 540K, were made with these colors and available only in the international line. The Auburn had white fenders and was one of the prettiest Hot Wheels ever but lost that beauty with time. The colors can be changed by placing the car in hot or cold water.

The Windsplitter above shows the cool color on the back and the hot color on the front. The cars used special metal that would take water without corrosion. Today some of the cars change colors very well and others have changed to different colors and do not change very much. This is due to the durability of the various paint colors. These Color Racers are somewhat rare because they were not made very long and not collected by many collectors.

The Convertibles not only changed color but had internal bladders that expanded when hot and made parts of the body work move such as a shaker hood rising.
